Elaborate security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order during Datta Jayanti celebrations at the communally sensitive Dattapeetha-Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district.
Talking to reporters after attending the police commemoration day on Sunday, Director General of Police K R Srinivasan said two platoons of Central Armed Reserved Forces (CARF) would be deployed at the Dattapeetha. He added that a large posse of civil force and Karnataka State Reserved Police (KSRP) have been deployed to prevent any unwanted incident.
Additional Director General of Police Shankar Bidari has been sent to the spot to supervise the security arrangements and take necessary steps to maintain law and order, the DGP said.
Tribute
The State police on Sunday paid glowing tributes to 720 policemen from all over India, who made sacrifices this year for the unity and integrity of the country.
With a great patriotic fervour, the Police Commemoration Day was celebrated at the CAR Parade Grounds on Mysore Road where the policemen, who died while performing their duties during the period September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007, were remembered.
Floral tributes were paid at the Martyrs’ Memorial in memory of the eleven policemen from Karnataka, who laid down their lives. They are: A B Venkatesh, Shivamallaiah, Yogananda Swamy, Sharanappa, Muralidhar P Gaonkar, Sharanappa, Raghuramaiah, Hadimani, Shanthaveerappa, Hanumanthaiah and Chandrashekhar.
A gun salute was paid to the martyrs before observing a two minutes silence.
Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said the department is taking steps to pay a compensation of Rs five lakh within a fortnight to the kin of policemen killed.
Further Mr Srinivasan said the department also aims at disposing of the pension cases within two months.
