Dog menace to pedestrians

Sir, It is quite often observed that people, who go for early morning walks along with their pet dogs do not follow safety measures such as chaining them. This creates problems for other passers by, some of whom feel apprehensive of the impending danger from unchained dogs.
While it is agreed that dog owners have got every right to take their pets with them, they should realise their responsibility in ensuring the safety of other road users. They may argue that their pets do not harm others, but that is often not sufficient to allay fears of other pedestrians.
Dog owners should follow minimum safety measures by chaining their pets instead of treating them specially and giving them full freedom in public roads as in their house, without realising the avoidable fear and danger to other road users.

Globalisation knocks
Sir, This refers to The silent haemorrhaging of the world’s biodiversity (DH, Oct 17). It succinctly tells us how the danger of global warming is already affecting us. If action is not taken immediately, man will be the next species to pay the price for his own actions.
Unfortunately, it may not be instant wiping out, but a long suffering for our children. But how does one get this message across to the people, who are destroying green hills and other natural vegetation near us?

Karunanidhi-bashing
Sir, The famous Patthar-Chatti Ramlila Committee in Allahabad has resolved to set an effigy of Karunanidhi also along with Ravana, Kumbakarna and Meganath, the three major demon kings, on fire on Vijayadasami (victory day) of Dasara.

It is true that no one in any religion will agree to Karunanidhi’s disparaging comments on Rama. But, burning his effigy isn’t the best way to protest. One way of recording our displeasure is writing thousands of letters to Karunanidhi imploring him not to do it.

Behind bloodshed
Sir, This refers to the editorial The grisly welcome (DH, Oct 20). Benazir’s reconciliation with Gen Musharraf has not only established her as an enemy of the movement for democracy, but has also created rifts within her own party ranks.

The bloodshed in Pakistan has several messages. For Benazir, it should make apparent the indispensability of the army in controlling armed militancy.

To the people, it should be a reminder that terrorism remains the greatest threat to democracy.

Team India is young
Sir, With the seven-wicket victory against the Aussies in the inaugural Twenty-20 international, Team India has proved beyond doubt that its Twenty-20 World Cup triumph is no flash in the pan. India’s advantage over Australia in this format is that it’s full of youngsters. Experienced players may be OK for the 50-over-format, but to pile up quick runs, youngsters are important. That too to start the run pile from ball one and make the total an impossible one for the opponents.

Trust youngsters
Sir, India’s victory at the Twenty-20 international against Australia in Mumbai is creditable. It was heartening to see the batsmen go about their job of getting runs without much problem.
This shows that we need to give more opportunities to youngsters, though the experienced trio Sachin, Saurav and Rahul, who have also some years of cricket left in them, must be used in longer formats of the game.
