Appreciating India’s support for initiatives aimed at restoring democracy in Myanmar the United Nations has asked New Delhi to take the lead in resolving the crisis in the neighbouring country.
This message was conveyed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday by UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari, who also expressed his satisfaction at India’s response and stressed on the need for “qualitative results” for accelerating the democratisation process.
According to an official statement, the Prime Minister expressed India’s support for the UN Secretary General’s ongoing efforts to encourage a resumption of the dialogue process within Myanmar. He reiterated India’s conviction that the process of national reconciliation and political reform initiated by the Government of Myanmar should be taken forward expeditiously in an inclusive manner, including the issue of release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Briefing reporters after the meeting with Singh, Gambari said he expect India to encourage the authorities in Yangon to work with the UN to achieve the common objective of peaceful, stable and prosperous Myanmar.
“The fact that I was received at the highest level shows that the Government of India is committed to working with the UN Secretary General,” he said.
“Theoretically, all of us can do more to resolve the crisis in Myanmar,” he told reporters when asked about his expectations from India.
Gambari is scheduled to go to that country again next month for another round of discussions with the military leadership there and the opposition seeking a democratic set-up.
