Preeja, Starley set new marks

Two meet records were set as the Railway athletes dominated the inaugural day of the four-day 47th Open National athletic championships here on Tuesday.

Preeja Sreedharan and Benedict Starley, both of Railways, set meet records in the women's 10,000M and men's high jump respectively. Railways picked up two gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
Sreedharan, who clocked 33:25.00, pushed her team-mates Kavita Raut (34:00.50) and Preeti L Rao (36:41.5) to the second and third spots respectively. Sreedharan bettered her previous best of 34:11.45 seconds set in the last edition in Delhi last year.

In men's high jump, Benedict cleared 2.19 metres for the gold medal. He eclipsed the previous mark of 2.18M set by Shankar Rai (RSPB).

Harishankar Rai (2.15M) took the silver while Vinod Kumar (2.03M) settled for the bronze medal.
Surender and C Hamza of SSCB clinched the gold in the men's 10,000M and 1500M respectively.
Surender clocked 29:04.7 en route to gold. Railways' Sandeep Kumar and Saji Mathew took the silver and bronze medals respectively

In the 1500-metre race, Hamza took the yellow metal in a time of 3:33.88. Sajeesh Joseph (Railways) clocked 3:41.63 seconds to grab the silver, while Pritam Bind of ONGC took the bronze in a time of 3:41.90.
Tata Athletic Academy's Sinimol Paulose, representing Steel Plant Sports Board (SPSB), fell short of her previous best of 4:10.51 seconds, but was still good enough to bag the gold in the women's 1500M event. She clocked 4:15.5.

Railways' O P Jaisha (4:18.6) and Sushma Devi (4:19.1) had to be content with the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Krishna Poonia of Railways won the women's discus gold with a heave of 52.34 metres. Saroj Sihag (49.17M) and Baljit Kaur (48.60M) of All India Petroleum Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) ended up second and third respectively.
In women's long jump, Reshmi Bose of Kerala pocketed the gold with a leap of 6.06 metres. Prajusha (5.92M) and J J Shoba (5.88), both of Railways, finished second and third respectively.
