Vishvabharati Rural Development and Samajvikas Women Organisation President B Sharada has advised people to avail birth certificates free of cost from respective local authorities within 21 days of child birth.
In a press release, she has highlighted that obtaining birth certificates was compulsory.
Birth certificates were required for admission to schools, inclusion of names in ration cards, for obtaining employment and passport, for voting right and above all for proving that a person is an Indian citizen.
People can obtain birth certificates in the local bodies concerned where the child has born. In villages, the village accountant was authorised to issue birth certificates.
In town municipal council and town panchayat areas, health inspectors issued birth certificates.
If the child is born in the limits of city municipal council and city municipal corporation the birth certificate should be obtained from health officer of the respective urban local body, she explained.
The birth of a child should be registered at the local body concerned within 21 days of the birth and for this period no fee will be charged for issuing birth certificate.
Fees
From 21 days to 30 days the fee will be Rs 2; from 30 days to one year Rs 5; and for above one year the fee will be Rs 10.
Sharada said her organisation has taken up an awareness drive about birth certificates Chincholi, Jewargi and Surapur taluks.
