The physically challenged took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday, demanding establishment of an independent board to look into the problems of the physically challenged people.
Advocate Chandrashekhar Gabbur speaking after submitting the memorandum said that there were 5500 physically handicapped in the district but no action had been initiated to provide them any employment though there were special state and central government schemes making provision for fruitful employment of the handicapped.
There were 120 physically challenged persons who were computer literates but none of them had a job.
It was very unfortunate that the district hospital had not even a single doctor who could treat the mentally retarded and the deaf and dumb, he said.
Hostels, training centres be opened
Hashimpeer Walikar demanded that special training centres and hostels be opened to provide technical training so that the physically challenged could be self employed.
Demanding implementation of the state and central government schemes, he said that the families of the physically be given ration cards and stipends.
The leader of the physically challenged Prashant Ganur said that the physically handicapped be appointed directly, failing which an unemployment pay of Rs 2000 be paid to all the handicap people.
