LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Justice delayed, but not denied

Sir,

It seemed Wednesday was a day of life sentences across the country as a former minister, policemen, a lawyer and fundamentalist leaders were among the 60 convicts who were given this punishment by courts for criminal acts in four separate cases.

Surely, the punishments will strengthen the common man’s faith in the judiciary. It also serves as a warning that no person, irrespective of his status, can get away with murder cases.

The Madhumita murder case not only evoked nationwide outrage but also brought to the fore the diabolical games of sleaze, betrayal and murder politicians like Amarmani Tripathi play. The crucial lesson to be learnt from the sentence is that people should outright reject criminals and malcontents like Amarmani in the elections. If criminals like him become MPs, MLAs and ministers, it will have a debilitating effect on the system and the polity. The best place for these people is jail.

Criminals in politics

Sir,

A special court in Dehradun has convicted former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani Tripathi for the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla in 2003.  It is learnt Amarmani is involved in about 33 criminal cases. Being a high profile and wealthy politician Amarmani has plenty of chances to escape.

It has been proved beyond doubt that our politicians wish for their own pleasure at the cost of the people and exchequer. These criminals should be kept out of politics in public and the country’s interest.

Book offenders

Sir,

Apropos the letter written by H Narayanan (Aftermath of pooja, DH, Letters to the Editor, Oct 25.), how many times should Halasooru lake be cleaned after the festival season? Isn’t prevention better?

The authorities should strictly monitor and ensure no one pollutes the lake by throwing poisonous debris into it. Offenders should be immediately booked under the provisions of law. Its a shame that on the pretext of religion some people blatantly desecrate the lake time and again.

Clay idols

Sir,

We have seen during the Ganeshostav festival and again now during the Navratri festival, how clay idols are drawn back to the shore causing tremendous hazards to the sea and the inhabitants of the sea and ponds.

The idols should be made of natural-waste, which will not only serve as food for the fishes of the sea, but also will be safer with no idols returning back to the shore. We have now to become aware of the  environment and look into helping the environment by making idols that will dissolve in the sea and will provide as food for the inhabitants of the sea.

Ethnic fight

Sir,

This refers to the editorial LTTE fights back(DH, Oct 25). The ethnic war in Sri Lanka has been going on for so many years. The talks between Sri Lankan government and the LTTE did not help much in arriving at a permanent solution.

And over a period of time the LTTE has acquired the air capability in its territory. It is high time the Sri Lankan government and LTTE put in their minds to solve the ethnic issue through discussions for human peace in its territory.

Pak democracy

Sir,

The arrival of Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan was greeted with a bomb explosion claiming a heavy toll, of over 140 persons. With Nawaz Sharif having expressed his intention to come back to Pakistan, the repeat of violent incidents when he arrives in Pakistan cannot be ruled out.

Benazir and Nawaz are the strong political forces in the Pakistani soil which President Pervez Musharraf has been consistently subduing. The President is the stumbling block before the revival of democracy.
