No VIP facilities for Amarmani
DH News Service, Dehra Dun:

A day after he was sentenced to life imprisonment, woes of former Uttar Pradesh minister Amarmani Tripathi are far from over.

After being convicted in the Madhumita Shukla murder case along with his wife Madhumani, Dehra Dun district jail authorities have now withdrawn all VIP facilities to the couple despite protests by his lawyers.

Facilities withdrawn

“All those facilities which were earlier given to Amarmani Tripathi have now been completely withdrawn,” said home secretary B N Joshi.

Till Thursday, both Tripathi and his wife were getting top facilities including a separate room with bed as well as the desired sumptuous food among many other things.

With the withdrawal of facilities, the couple would have to wear jail uniform and work like other inmates. The sources said Tripathi is seeking some work in the kitchen along with his wife  Madhumani.

Amarmani Tripathi was brought to the jail here after the the case was transferred to Dehra Dun in March this year following allegations that he and his wife can impede a free and fair trial in the home state.

Madhumita Shukla was found murdered at her Lucknow residence on May 9, 2003.

The poetess, who was seven month pregnant, was murdered at the behest of Madhumani who was opposed to her affair with her husband.

Significantly, withdrawal of VIP facilities came after the slain poetess’ sister Nidhi said as long as Tripathi was enjoying VIP treatment inside the jail, he remains a threat to the society.

Meanwhile, Surat Singh Negi, the counsel of Tripathi has lodged protest with the jail authorities for withdrawal of VIP facilities. “The matter has not ended at lower court. And as long as he (Amarmani Tripathi) is an MLA, he must enjoy all the facilities,” said Surat Singh.
