‘Bala Vignana’, a popular science magazine in Kannada - began in 1978 with the object of popularising science in native language, as a part of the project of Karnataka Science and Technology Board.
Kerala Sahitya Parishat convened a meeting of the popular science associations across India and called upon them to popularise the science literature in their native language. Inspired by the clarion call at the convention and also influenced by Rastra Kavi Kuvempu, the State started Bala Vignana. Within two years the magazine reached more than 5,000 schools and colleges across the State.
When an advertisement on the subscription and publication was published in a magazine the response was overwhelming. This paved way for the establishment of the State Vignana Parishat as an autonomous body. Educationist the late Dr H Narasimhaiah became the first president of the Parishat.
The Parishat, since its establishment, has conducted 22 workshops and published more than 120 works on science in Kannada language. Besides, this 27 year old organisation has in its credit uninterrupted publication of Bala Vignana.
Workshops
Various workshops for teachers, children and state-level science conferences, Vignanotsava and jathas were successfully conducted by the Parishat.
District centres
Despite the popularity of the Parishat, there are only 12 district centres across the State. The government had sanctioned Rs One crore for Dharwad, Haveri, Tumkur and Shimoga districts each to open the centres. However, the as the Union Government has not yet released its share of the amount for the centres. Hence, the State government has warned not to use the amount sanctioned for the centres till the Union government releases the due amount.
Amount
The sum sanctioned by the State government for this purpose is deposited in the deputy commissioner’s account in the respective districts.
As the Financial Depart at the Centre has objected to releasing of the money, opening these district centres seems a distant reality.
Suvarna Vignana bagina
As part of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, the Vijnana Parishat had planned to publish 100 books under the Rs 101-lakh worth project Suvarna Vignana Bhagina. The list of authors were also prepared for the purpose. However, as the government did not release the amount the project was not implemented, an office-bearer in the Parishat told Deccan Herald.
