Cutting EDGE
Call it the return of the retro chic. Tresses look cool and hip in modern versions of the blunt, says Shilpi Madan

French hair stylist Stephane of the Franck Provost salon brings in the Paris Cabaret collection, pulling a leaf out of the 1930s and 1950s.

He snips locks in keeping with the Indian climes, and spells classy styles this season."Graphic blunt cuts that fall along the jawbone with long bangs that lie directly above the eyebrows; mid-length cuts that are subtly tapered down to the ends and mid-length cuts layered all over and thinned at the ends, and unstructured and rounded cuts are big this season," he says.

Of course, the extent of layering hinges upon your mane texture and thickness. "Nourish you hair with hair food like a warm coconut oil massage followed by a steam, frizz control serum to tame the errant tresses and a smoothening of the entire mane with freshly moisturised hands for an enviable gleam," says Nalini of the  Nalini and Yasmin chain of salons.

"If your hair tends to curl up, snip till mid length and opt for hair straightening. If you favour the tousled look, loosely curl your hair with warm tongs for a slight appealing dishevelled look." Internationally, gentle waves are in. "I would say that waves with curls on the sides and split waves are the next big styles in hair," says Jean Claude Biguine, a global name in beauty care.

Colour cue

"Go for a single international colour rather than a combination of two to three shades," advises hair expert Coleen Khan. "Warm mahogany, deep terracotta and burgundy add rich texture to the Indian hair and are hot on the circuit these days rather than streaking the hair with several shades.

"Ruddy reds, shades of burnished copper and the peroxide blonde look are absolutely passe," affirms Dilshad Pastakia, snip specialist to the likes of Shahrukh Khan and John Abraham. "Stick to a warm tone in the brown palette that flatters your skin tone and rock the party."

Strands talk

Make the trend work for you. Discuss the changes in a hairstyle you want, with the snip specialist, to make sure it flatters your face. Your hairstyle can literally make or break your appearance.

Opt for a low maintenance, versatile look that works best with your hair type. Especially if you are always experiencing a time crunch. Dab tips of your hair strands with floral oil to safeguard against breakage and sun attack especially if you are a beach lover.
