Lyrics of devotion
Vijayadashami has always been associated with triumph and new beginnings. On this day after the pooja, Vidyarambha or beginning of studies takes place in many houses. That is also the day many new ventures are started. People believe that anything started on the Vijayadashami will be a success. Many students all over South India consider this day auspicious to start their foray into fine arts. Children are taken to music and dance teachers to start classes. This is the usual practice.
Tirupugazh are songs written by a Tamil Saint Arunagirinathar in praise of Lord Subramanya. The Thirupugazh Anbhargal, a group that has made singing of Thirupugazh and spreading the name of Lord Muruga their way of life, celebrates Vijayadashami in a unique way. Their guru A S Raghavan based in Delhi, records a song that has to be started on this day and sends it well in advance to various regions in India and abroad. At the appointed hour, his disciples open the cassette or CD and listen to his speech, get his blessings and along with their own disciples learn the particular Thirupugazh song.
Vijayadashami was celebrated between 3.30 and 5.30 pm at the Adarsha Polytechnic at R T Nagar in Bangalore on October 21. All the Thirupugazh Anbhargal from the Bangalore region congregated to hear their guru's words and start their Thirupugazh song. A unique Guru Vandana and Vijayadashami indeed.
