John Smoking Abraham wants to kick the butt. As simple as that. But Anurag Kashyap takes the hero and his puff to an insane level that your brain gets baked in the smoke.
“A lot of people stop smoking everyday — by dying,” the movie begins on a dangerous note. What follows is more than enough to kill any lover of cinema.
No Smoking is bizarre and it will be an award-winning feat if you comprehend at least one reel. First of all, John doesn’t have an identity. The name is “K, just K”. (The alphabet syndrome runs in the family. K’s brother is J.)
The scenes show no regard for geography. John wakes up in Siberia, only to be gunned down by some funny soldiers. The next moment he rises from a bathtub in his cosy Mumbai home. (Time machine huh!)
The next day, he is in the basement of a dingy rehabilitation centre to meet Bengali Baba (Paresh Rawal). John’s marriage is on the rocks as wife Ayesha Takia can no longer stand the “rings” in the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen.
The shots are well executed, but the nutty storyline (“Kafka-esque” according to Kashyap) ensures that everything goes up in smoke.
Don’t get lost in this murky maze.
