Shoot Em Up
Namrata Iyengar
English (A)
Cast: Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Belucci Director: Michael Davis

Watching the rugged, oh-so-good-with-a-gun Clive Owen in a pulse-racing movie may be visual poetry, but seeing the cute Paul Giamatti matching Owen’s every step and shot is something else.

The veteran will blow your mind with his skill at delivering dialogues in perfect timing, plus he looks like he was born to shoot people! It is for these reasons you must watch Shoot ‘Em Up.
The story tries to explore the softer side of the hard-boiled hero, but ends up giving the cream of the action to the baddie. Angry young man Smith (Owen) is a man with no past, who ends up protecting a baby on one of his assignments.

Many gunfights later, he finds a band of mysterious hitmen, led by Hertz (Giamatti), want to erase all traces of the baby.
Teaming up with a prostitute named DQ (Belucci), Smith has to unravel the mystery of why everyone wants the baby dead. The only problem is they are thwarted at every step by the nimble Hertz.

Director Michael Davis doubles as a writer, and delivers both script and dialogue in delectable quantities.
The dark humour that comes through in Smith’s dialogues and Hertz’s manic laughter are absolute treats. Paul Giamatti truly cuts loose from his earlier dramatic image and has complete bindaas fun.
Shoot ‘Em Up may be over the top for some, but what else are movies for? Go see!
