The BJP on Friday questioned the timing of the “Tehelka sting operation” that accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of having a role in the post-Godhra riots of 2002, saying if there was any truth in its contents, then judicial process could take care of it.

The BJP which has come under attack from major political parties with RJD leader Lalu Prasad even demanding the arrest of Modi, sought to link Tehelka with the Congress.

Attacking Tehelka, BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the magazine has never done any sting against any Congress government and went on to allege that the Central government had given it tax exemption.
Mr Prasad said the manner in which it was carried out “clearly indicates the mindset to bring about a sharp communal divide” at the time of polls and urged the Election Commission to take steps to check such “sinister attempts” to aggravate the communal divide.

Mr Prasad insisted that there were several “inaccuracies” in the content of the tapes and suggested that some of the leaders who figured in it could just be “boasting”.

The BJP leader also pointed out that Mr Modi never went to Naroda Patiya during the riots as claimed in the expose.
