Dowry: Groom thrashed
Chandigarh, dhns:
An NRI bridegroom was soundly thrashed by relatives of his prospective bride after his family allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh in dowry at a wedding ceremony at Patiala, about 60 km from here on Friday.

The drama started after the baraat of NRI doctor Gurpreet Singh, landed in style in a limousine at the house of Gurbachan Singh.

Just before the bride and the groom were to take the customary pheras at the mantap the groom and his father reportedly demanded Rs 50 lakh in dowry shocking the girl’s family.

The girl, a media student herself pursuing her MBBS, stood up and walked-off the mantap refusing to marry the boy.

The enraged relatives on the girl’s side immediately caught hold of Gurpreet Singh, who is reportedly a doctor settled in the USA and his father. They were given a sound thrashing before the police reached arrived to rescue them. Their turbans went flying in the melee before they were taken to the police station.

The girl’s father, Gurbachan Singh ,who is a bank manager, was in tears and said, “How can I pay such a huge amount? I promised them to pay Rs five lakh on the spot but they were not budging. My daughter is highly educated, should I sell her like this?”

The match had been struck by the two families through the internet.
The badly beated up groom, Gurpreet Singh could only mutter, “I do not know anything” while sitting at a police station.

A case under the dowry act has been registered against him and his father.
