A class XII student of St Joseph’s Convent, Ashish Anand, was beaten to death by his teacher in Bhagalpur on Friday.
The incident took place when Ashish was ‘chided’ by his close friends for securing good marks in the examinations. His friends remarked that he had fetched good marks as he received tuition from his school teacher.
As the teacher got wind of the remarks, he became infuriated and asked Ashish how the matter leaked out. The teacher feared that he could lose his job if the news that he imparted tuitions to students became public.
“The enraged teacher later roughed up Ashish mercilessly,” said the victim’s father, Ashwani Kumar Jha, a lawyer by profession. Eventually, the 18-year-old student was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries. Neither the principal of the school Father Verghese nor any of his colleagues were available for comment on the incident.
The Bhagalpur police have, meanwhile, registered a case in this connection. However, school authorities are using their clout to hush up the matter.
The incident has evoked a strong reaction among the local residents, who had assembled at Mr Jha’s residence, where the body of Ashish, the only child of the lawyer, was kept.
The incident comes a day after the death of a Class XI student in Ahmedabad. He collapsed when his teacher asked him to run around the ground five times for arriving late.
