The farmers of Malur are happy a lot these days as they do not have to worry about the rains or loss of crops particularly Maize and Ragi, which are the major crops in this region till now here. Reason: They have now switched on to Eucalyptus crops for more profit. The crop has been attaining popularity for many reasons. The farmers need not spend much on the saplings of Eucalyptus as they are available at only 50 paise per sapling.
Meanwhile, the farmer after buying the saplings can just lay back and get them ready for sowing operations with the help of JCB machines.
These plants are not prone to diseases and are grown for many by-products which they produce. The farmer need not worry about fertilisers also.
Leaves of Eucalyptus can be used as a fuel for the Brick factories which are about 250 in the taluk. Nearly thousands of wood is exported to other states from Eucalyptus yards here. Being a major commercial crop it also brings more tax to APMC.
Though the farmers have embraced Eucalyptus for their living of late, it seems that they are unaware of the impending danger. The growth of Eucalyptus as a major crop can cause infertility of the soil and environment hazards which will be major problem in future and responsibility lies with the farmers who have to consider it a major issue of concern.
