A water revolution
Nirmala Ramasubramanian

BEML  Layout VI Stage situated at Thubbarahalli Bangalore, is quietly witnessing a wet revolution taking place in front of their eyes. There are nearly 700 plots of which 350 have houses built on them and there are around 500 families residing here. Even though there was plenty of rains last year the residents faced water shortage during the summer months. The  BEML House Building Cooperative Society dug bore wells, but the solution was not permanent. The residents had to still depend on water tankers for their needs.

Some impatient residents dug their own bore wells, thinking that water problem are completely solved for them, ignoring the fact that there will be steep decline in ground water in the periphery in future. Taking the situation into consideration,  Spandana, The BEML VI stage Resident association forum strongly felt that need of Rainwater Harvesting in the layout was the correct solution to solve this water crisis in future. Spandana then invited RWH club members to create awareness among public on water harvesting and distributed Rain Water Harvesting material through Spandana News letter. 60 residents showed interest and some residents have already installed Rain Water Harvesting plants in their house. Many owners constructing new houses are implementing the plant in their new houses.

Mr Vijay, who has implemented recharge well in the his own site says that due to the recharge well installed last year and also because of  the heavy rains last year, his bore well not dried up in this year. .

Mrs.Bhatnagar who has installed roof water harvesting in the layout says that she doesn't depend on water tanks or regular water distribution during the rainy season. Mr.Surya Prakash one of the resident and Spandan committee member explains that Rain water harvesting is a simple technology and easily implement able.
An individual home or an apartment, the roof is the catchments area. This must be kept clean. No junk should be stored here. Rainwater falling on such a clean surface will be of very good quality. This rainwater should be filtered and stored in a sump tank. The excess water from the rain water from the roof after harvesting should be allowed into a recharge well. This recharge well should be planned in the storm water drain network and should be usually 2 to 3 feet in diameter and about 10 to 20 feet deep depending on the percolation rate at the site.
The overall objective being not to allow a drop of rainwater to go out of the site, but to be used to supplement groundwater

This rainwater management will involve a clean roof for every house, a storage sump of 6,000 litres and a recharge well.

Future Plan:
Spanadana has a future plan that every vacant site should have its own water harvesting structure with raised earthen bund of a foot all around and a recharge pit in the centre. After construction commences, each house should have its own arrangement for water harvesting. Rooftop rainwater should be filtered and stored in a small sump for use.

With this water harvesting plan BEML layout can handle its water shortage in future and if every layout makes rainwater harvesting happen, then Bangalore can undertake its water deficiency.
