Both Rizwanur Rehman and his bride Priyanka Todi were advised to convert after their marriage.
Mr Rizwanur had been urged to convert to Hinduism by his father-in-law, industrialist Ashok Todi and two other senior family members of his wife on the night of August 31 after the couple returned to his house. His elder brother Rukbanur disclosed this to PTI on Sunday.
The couple had registered their marriage under the Special Marriages Act on August 18 and returned to Rizwanur’s Tiljala home on the night of August 31.
The computer graphics teacher had not responded to the suggestion. After about four days, Mrs Priyanka was urged to convert to Islam by members of Rizwanur’s family and some of their neighbours. The girl had said the couple would decide on the suggestion after the situation arising out of her family’s opposition to the marriage settled down, Mr Rukbanur said.
Rizwanur and Priyanka had been called to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar on September 1, 4 and 8. The girl had returned to her father on September 8 after an agreement to return a week later.
