Indian teenager Gaganjeet Bhullar stared helplessly as he saw an eagle from Filipino Juvic Pagunsan swoop down on the 72nd hole to snatch away from him the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational golf title on Sunday.
Only minutes ago, Bhullar, playing his first season as a professional, had a sensational finish with back-to-back birdies on the last two holes to come in as the clubhouse leader. Pagunsan, 28, parred the 16th and then sank a birdie on 17th to reduce the gap to just one.
He needed a birdie on 18th to get into a play-off. He smashed a driver down the centre of the final fairway and then hit a perfect six-iron from 205 yards to come within seven feet for an eagle putt, which he duly holed for an amazing win.
Bhullar was left at 18-under 270, while Pagunsan made it to 19-under 269.
Also turning in a good result and a top-10 finish after a long time was another Indian Harmeet Kahlon. Playing in the same group as Bhullar, Kahlon totalled 15-under 273 to tie for fifth with Scott Barr and Prom Meesawat.
Digvijay Singh was tied 14th and Arjun singh tied 29th and Naman Dawar tied 45th.
Pagunsan finished on 19-under for his maiden Asian Tour title in his second year as a professional.
Bhullar, joint leader after the third round which ended only Sunday morning, carded a 67 and then played the final round in three-under 69 to become the clubhouse leader at 18-under 270.
It was nevertheless a great result for the talented Bhullar, who has twice finished second even on Indian Tour. And he can look forward to a bright career and maybe a full card for 2008.
Among India's other challengers Digvijay Singh (70) finished with 11-under 277 and tied 14th, while Arjun Singh crumbled to a final round 76 and tied 29th at seven-under 281. Naman Dawar (72) was three-under 285 and tied 45th.
