The high profile fixture between champions Madras Engineer Group (MEG) and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in the Super Division league was abandoned in the 85th minute owing to bad light at the Bangalore Football Stadium here on Saturday. Organisers informed that the match will be replayed on a later date.
BEML’s powerhouse status was vindicated with an eighth-minute lead through Gopi but MEG showed their champion stuff as Lokeshwar Singh restored parity in the 36th minute.
A winner was still a possibility when the match was stopped with referee Vijaya Kumar going for the long whistle.
The premature end to an exciting contest could have been avoided if the kick-off had gone as per the scheduled time, a rarity nowadays in the Super Division encounters.
BEML went ahead when Gopi’s weak angled shot was enough to beat MEG custodian Malay Paul. Conceding a goal for the first time this season, they were stretched hard when Wilfred twice came close to scoring.
At the other end, Nigilraj missed the target by a whisker in the 29th minute but seven minutes later, he whipped in a splendid cross from right and fellow-forward Lokeshwar powered in a header for the equaliser.
MEG took the momentum in the second-half with Nigilraj and Lokeshwar threatening the rival defence.
