The public have described the initiative of the department to repair the roads as an eye-wash technique.
After all their requests failed, the public and certain organisations had given a bundh call across the district for Tuesday. Much support had been expressed for the move from all sections of the society.
As a response to the call, the department has started filling potholes of the stretch of NH 17 starting from the Santosh Nagar bus stand at Hemmadi in Kundapur taluk. The roadside boulders and soil are being used for the temporary repair works.
The idea of filling the potholes ranging from 0.5 ft to one ft by using this technique has provoked the residents of the area. The people are expressing their disappointment in sharp words against “the techniques of wasting the government’s money”.
ZP chief’s ire
Zilla Panchayat President S Raju Poojary visited the spot as soon as he got the information that the National Highway was being repaired on an urgent basis, and collected details from the contractors regarding the project.
Speaking to Deccan Herald on the occasion, Mr Poojary said the unscientific way of filling the potholes just for the reason that bundh has been scheduled on Tuesday is not a welcome attitude.
The government fund should not be wasted like having no common sense that the bigger potholes cannot be repaired permanently by using boulders and soil.
ZP member Madan Kumar and Taluk Panchayat member Syed Saheb Shirur were present on the occasion.
