Students' woes: Courses aplenty, but faculty members missing!
By Shruthi Balakrishna, DH News Service, Bangalore:
The measures taken by the Education Department and colleges to curb the shortage of computer science teachers in government colleges, does not seem to have been of much help to the students.
Students express their dissatisfaction over the appointment of guest faculty and admit that the acute shortage of teachers has put them into hardship. They have to rely on their seniors for notes and projects, while some have enrolled for coaching in the private computer centres.
When Deccan Herald spoke to a few students this what they had to say:
“The guest faculty are irregular. So, we have to depend on the notes provided by our teachers. We somehow manage with the theory classes but for practical classes and projects we need a lot of guidance,” said Bharathi K, a final year student of Maharani Science College.
Hema P, a BA student at RC Government College said, “We have no lecturers or guest faculty. We had to refer textbooks and guides and prepare notes on our own. Since I had learnt the basics of computers, I somehow managed to do well in the exam but students with no computer background really had to struggle,” she added.
Kavya Shree B T, studying BBM in a government college said that earlier they had computer science in fourth and fifth semesters but now it is in the third and fourth semesters. “In the fourth semester we had to study only the basics, which we could somehow managed. In the fifth semester, we have some programming languages like MS DOS and networking, which we find difficult. We have prepared notes but we are still apprehensive. We did not attend the classes conducted by the part-time lecturer as he would take the class continuously for three hours. We would find it difficult to concentrate for such a long time,” she narrates.
Lone teacher!
It isn’t a bed of roses for students studying computer science as an optional subject either.
Dasappa K, a second year B Sc student of a Government college said that no notes are given. They also face another problem - there’s just one faculty member to teach the subject. “My lecturer never finishes the portion. We had one guest lecturer but he was of no help. Most of us read from textbooks,” he added.
