National Highway 17 bundh total
DH News Service, Udupi:
Supported by people from all walks of life and different organisations, the National Highway-17 bundh observed in Udupi district was a complete success on Tuesday. The bundh was peaceful.

The protesters blocked the highway at various junctions and staged various performances as a mark of their protest.

Save National Highway Committee had given a bundh call protesting the negligence of the Highway authorities towards repairing the NH 17 which was totally under miserable condition for the past several months. Except those of necessary services like milk vans and ambulances, no other vehicles plied on the highway under the district limits.

The activists staged demonstrations at 22 different places in the district. The highway stretching from Shirur (north border) to Hejamady (south border) was literally a playground for the protesters. All private and government buses had stopped their service. The authorities of KSRTC informed that all buses plying through NH 17 have been stopped for 24 hours.

Though more protesters had gathered in Brahmavar and Kundaopur areas, the rest of the activists were careful enough to see that no vehicle entered the district. As bundh came into effect at 7 am, children started skating from Jaravali Circle, while a team of youth organised orchestra, dance and music programmes on the highway. ‘Lagori’, a traditional game of Tulunadu was played under the leadership of Shirur seer Lakshmivarateertha Swamiji. The junctions also provided forums for huli vesha kunita, volley ball, badminton and cricket matches.
Some people observed a mock funeral procession of the Highway officials at Kallianpur. Another group staged a skit depicting the misery of the pregnant woman due to the bad condition of the highway. People started steeping into roads in Udupi city only in the evening, but vehicles were rare even in the night.

Attendance was poor in government offices though they had not been closed. The outstation passengers experienced the heat of the bundh.

Appears to be the result of the bundh, a team of experts will arrive in the district on October 31 and study the road conditions, a preparatory meeting held in the evening on Tuesday, according to Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj.

Kundapur, Katpady
Shankarpura Rotary Club in association with local organisations conducted a magic show on the highway at Katapady, which led to verbal strife between the activists and police.

A tug-of-war competition was held near Kaup circle between the associations of Kaup Jaycees and Rotary club.
Koni Murukai, Sangam, Koteshwara, Navunda, Uppunda, Baindoor and Shirur were the prime places of protest in Kundaput taluk.
