Govt should try to keep up the pace
Sir, Sensex racing past 20k is yet another reflection of global faith in our entrepreneurship, investment in knowledge and some pragmatic government policies. Our valuations have not yet been fully unlocked inspite of high price earning ratios – thanks to the compulsions of coalition governments. Otherwise who would be opposing energy security via 123 by ending nuclear apartheid our country had been facing so far?
To continue the momentum the least the government can do is to remove unnecessary controls which have become not only a hindrance but also a source of institutionalised corruption. Our more than one billion Indians need to be put in the numerator to become an engine of our growth. Thanks to 20 k, Mukesh Ambani has already become the richest man in the world. But to ensure such positions – we have to be cautious of the crooks and fly by night operators who may try to artificially inflate the stock market bubble till it bursts with a big a bang.

Bold decision
Sir, The Indian cricket team selectors should be congratulated for their bold decision in dropping Rahul Dravid for the first and second ODIs.There is lot of hue and cry over his exclusion. The criticism against selectors is unwarranted and unjustifiable as if he has been sacked for ever. Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid have played excess cricket and of late it is evident from their performance that they need a break at regular intervals. By rotating senior players, it will give an opportunity for younger cricketers who are in good shape.

BCCI politics
Sir, It is sad to read about the treatment being meted out to Rahul Dravid by the BCCI selectors. Being a very senior player, and always “Mr dependable”, BCCI should have counselled and convinced him to rest for a few matches and given him an opportunity to come back and prove his capabilities. It was a very indecent way of showing him the way out, and one can read very well the height of politics that is doing the rounds in the BCCI.

Ray of hope
Sir, This refers to the editorial Ray of hope (DH, Oct 30). It is shocking to hear mentally deprived undertrials languishing in prisons. You have rightly pointed out that undertrials are in prisons as they could not be produced before the court for mental abnormality. The Apex court has come as heaven sent for these prisoners by asking the government and police to fasttrack victims’ cases and settling their cases.

Untimely expose
Sir, Apropos your editorial Found guilty (DH, Oct 29). One can understand and share your agony and anguish at the gruesome Gujarat killings.
But the Tehelka sting operation coming just before the Gujarat assembly elections creates an impression that it was motivated and carried out at the behest of Narendra Modi’s detractors. If the weekly’s concern was to do justice to the riot victims it should have done this five years ago.
