The Inner Wheel Club of Tumkur recently conducted a sports meet for the mentally challenged children in Tumkur.
Keeping in mind the limitations of these specially abled children the sports event included throw ball, 25 and 50 meter running race, 25 meter walkathon, putting the ball in the bucket and other such events were organised.
The children took part in the event with all enthusiasm.
The meet was inaugurated by the president of the Inner Wheel Club, Subhashini Shivakumar who added that this was the first time that such an even was being organised for the mentally challenged children in the state.
The principal of Helen Keller school Gayathri Kavish, Sumithra Nagarju and others participated in the programme. “The inner wheel club wants to conduct many more of these events throughout the state” said Subhashini Shivakumar.
Eminent psychiatrist M Shivalingaiaha who spoke on the occasion added that such events went a long way in encouraging the hidden talents in these children who are sidelined from the normal children. “If we can identify the talents of these children then we can work on a personalised therapy programme for them that will help them to develop these skills. This will be further help them in dealing with life and the life style around them and help us train in dealing with it.” he added.
