Coming together to make a difference
Arathi Menon

It’s heartening to see a group of people coming together to do something for the society. More so, if they are ordinary citizens, with diverse aptitude but brought together by their desire to serve the society.
Madhyam is one such organisation comprising parents, friends, colleagues and neighbours who have come forward to spread love and joy to the society.

According to Noureen Vishnani, one of the members of the group, Madhyam believes that the society which they live in has given them a lot and that they must give something back to them.

“One way to do that is by doing something for people who are not as lucky as we are and do not have the basic facilities which we are fortunate to have,” Noureen says.

The work
Madhyam works with old age homes and orphanages. They identify people in such organisations who are in need of help and works towards making things better for them. Currently, they are working on a project where a camp will be held to do eye check-ups for the girls in an orphanage. “The girls in this orphanage has everything — good food, health and education. What is missing is the regular monitoring of health. We thought they need a better health to face the challenges of the world in the future,” Noureen says.

Named ‘Sapney’, this eye camp, scheduled for October 6, will have doctors visiting the orphanage, doing eye check-ups and providing the girls with spectacles or conducting surgeries if need be.

Madhyam has got support from Bangalore West Lions superspeciality eye hospital and their project ORBIS (makalla netra jyoti programme) to conduct the camp.

Madhyam also has many other projects in the pipeline. Some of the activities include Children’s Day celebration at the orphanage called ‘Masti’ on November 11, an eye camp in the school for blind called ‘Roshni’ in December and health check-ups and fun day in old age homes called ‘We Love you Ma and Pa’ in January, to name a few.
