When the Gopalganj DM, G Krishnaiah, was lynched by mob on December 5, 1994, the 1985-batch IAS officer was not the first civil servant to be killed while performing duty in the lawless Bihar.
In the same district, an IAS officer MPN Sharma was gunned down on the Gopalganj court premises in 1981. Paramhans Yadav, the prime accused in the murder of the IAS officer, was awarded death sentence by the trial court. Yadav was eventually hanged in Bhagalpur jail in November 1988.
Similarly, Randhir Verma, a Bihar cadre IPS officer, was shot dead in Dhanbad while foiling a bank dacoity attempt in early 90s.
Yet another IPS officer Ajay Kumar was gunned down by extremists in Lohardagga in October 2000. In recent times, Munger SP, K Surendra Babu, fell to extremists’ bullets on January 5, 2005. Like Krishnaiah, the young IPS officer, too, hailed from Andhra Pradesh.
Apart from IAS and IPS officers, other officials have also been targetted. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Sasaram Sanjay Singh while returning from an official meeting was gunned down by unidentified criminals in 2004.
