People always hoped that Susan and Mike would end up together, so it is quite a shock to go into the coma storyline and have another wonderful man in her life that seems pretty serious. Can you talk a little bit about that from the character’s point of view and what you think about what’s going on.
Well, I don’t know where it’s going, I just have to tell you that right now. What I enjoyed about the setup of it was that it seems very real and relatable that you would be in love with somebody and waiting and waiting and waiting in that situation and meanwhile, have a legitimate need to bond with somebody who understands what you’re going through and over time, you would develop a friendship that could feel like love or a different kind of love.
And then, of course, it’s just Susan’s luck that the second she chooses to switch over, he awakens which is great sort of writing because that’s the drama in the situation.
And then, the conflicting feelings about wanting to go back and who should she be with? And I think that’s all getting played out in a pretty honest way and allowing me to do some really fun, comedic and dramatic sort of blending of that.
Dougray is great. And I think one of the reasons it is working so well, is that he’s formidable in the way that I think you find yourself genuinely confused.
Like what is the better answer? You know things have always been kind of difficult with Mike. Was he a murderer? Was he not? (Laughs) Whatever. I mean it’s always been a little not easy, and maybe it would just be easy with Ian.
He’s this great, wonderful guy, and maybe you should go where it’s easy, and I think that’s, weighing that out. So I don’t know where it goes, but I’m having a lot of fun.
No wonder, two gorgeous guys.
Yeah, really, and that doesn’t suck either. (Laughs)
With the success of Burnt Toast, are you considering writing another book?
Oh, yes.
What will it take for Susan and Edie to truly become friends? Could they forget about their pasts?
I fantasise all the time about a spin off with Susan and Edie (Laughs). I just think they’re such two wonderful characters together, and I was actually thinking about it this morning. What would have to happen to make them unite? What would they have to unite against? And I think there’s something. I don’t know that I figured it out, but I think there could be something they would have to unite against and it would be fun.
Could Susan be happy with Mike and Edie together?
Well, she may have to be.
Do you think something as big as what you experienced would happen in your career and after Superman? Did you think at one point, ‘okay, I will win Golden Globes. I will be back in Hollywood, and I will be one of the most powerful actresses on TV’?
I never thought I would win a Golden Globes. That was still, like a really amazing night that I’ll never forget. I never thought I’d win anything.
