Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - we proudly call him the Father of our Nation. The man who waged a non-violent war against the British and succeeded in gaining freedom for our country. Yet another October 2 has come and gone by, reminding us about the Mahatma and his values.
But, in this fast paced world of ours, how many of us know about the life and struggle of Gandhi? Not many, right? No wonder, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Trust in Mandya has taken upon itself the task of spreading awareness about Gandhian values and his struggle for freedom among the younger generation.
The beautiful structure of the Memorial Trust in the heart of Mandya city is constructed at the cost of a crore. In fact, it is a perfect pictorial biography of the Mahatma. On display are a whole range of pictures, numbering 320, that explain Gandhi’s life right from his school days.
“Since a picture is equal to 1,000 words, we thought a photo gallery would be apt to spread awareness about the life and values of the Mahatma,” said former MP G Madegowda, chairman of the Memorial Trust.
In the corner of the auditorium is a statue of Gandhi sitting in front of charaka. Photos exhibited include Gandhi's childhood days, his study, his family members, foreign tours including his trip to South Africa, satyagraha, his association with personalities like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu, and so on.
Also on display are Gandhi’s letter on Dandi Satyagraha, details about the six attempts made on Gandhi's life and some important quotes from Gandhi.
Visiting the Memorial Trust and seeing the black and white photos of Gandhi’s life is an experience in itself. It is a good way to understand the Mahatma, the Father of our Nation.
