A lorry loaded with potatoes turned turtle at Bennur border near Hassan killing three and severely injuring 19 persons on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as Shanthi (20) from Shanthinagar, Neelamma (45) and Balaram (20) from Nallur village.
Narayana, Guruswamy, Ananda, Hemanth Kumar, Dilip, Gopi, Gangadhar, Kumar, Manjula, Jayamma, Deena, Parvin, Fauzida, Annapurna, Krishnaveni, Murthy and Driver Venkatesh have sustain serious injuries.
They were rushed to Malle Gowda District Hospital and are recuperating there. All the injured persons hail from Nallur, Magadi, Jyothinagar and Shanthinagar of Chikmagalur.
This lorry belonging to Tamil Nadu was brought to Chikmagalur to load potatoes so that it clould be supplied to Chennai. The accident occurred at 11.30 am near Bennur border when the driver lost control over the vehicles after avoiding a huge pot hole on the road and thus the lorry turned turtle. The deceased were said have been seated in the cabin and on the top of the lorry. The deceased and the injured are all agricultural labourers who had come to pick potatoes. While the local residents came to know about the accident, they rushed to the spot to help the victims. Circle Inspector Nagaraj Annegiowda and Sub Inspector J C Somshekar with police personnel and the local residents stopped one of the lorry and sent the victims to the hospital.
