Media should not incite public emotions
Sir, It is most unfortunate that a sting operation is also now misused for personal revenge as it happened in the case of a sting operation carried out by Live India channel on a school teacher.
But the fact shall remain that the electronic media are doing a commendable job, exposing some of the shocking criminal activities that go on unnoticed in the most innocuous places.
However, sometimes people are influenced rather adversely by the sensational revelations of such undercover operations.
The mob protesting against the pernicious activities goes berserk and burn vehicles, damage property and injure people.
While the wrath of the public is understandable, the eruption of violence is entirely unwarranted. Perhaps the media should be cautious about the outcome of their investigative journalism in future and take care not to incite public emotions so strongly.

Empower them
Sir, This refers to your article Was India done in by dubious decisions? (DH, Sept 9). England won the match in the first session itself when Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were given out by umpire Aleem Dar. When doubtful catches are referred to the third umpire, why not doubtful decisions of the umpires? The International Cricket Council is sleeping over the issue when the solution is as simple as giving power to the third umpire to recall the batsman on the field or off-the field depending on the replay decision. Let fairness prevail even if it means slight delay in the game.

Scam in the army
Sir, Perhaps scams in general and in army in particular are inevitable, Scam in procurement of eggs in army ( DH, Sept 8). Even for eggs army has specifications regarding weight and colour. Since it is only a food item and nobody bothers, army officers have taken liberty to deviate from standards and quantity which involve discrepancies in documents also.

Maoist menace
Sir, Apropos Maoists strike, kill 3 in AP (DH, Sept 8), the terror unleashed by the extremists in Andhra Pradesh is almost similar to what the Khmer Rouge inflicted upon the Cambodians. It’s shocking that year after year, the intensity of the mindless blood shedding in Jharkhand, Chattishgarh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh reaches a point of no return. The concerned state government should be blamed for the failure to control the Maoist attacks. The Centre should come forward and act immediately to help the affected state government.

Pathetic inefficiency
Sir, Declaration of Hyderabad as A-1 grade city shows Karnataka Government’s pathetic inefficiency in not getting Bangalore city the same benefit though it had become eligible earlier to Hyderabad. Politicians are busy in internal bickering only. Will our responsible politicians wake up and fight for the city’s due recognition without further delay?

Inordinate delays
Sir, Recently the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court had lamented the “inordinate delay” in court proceedings while disposing of a case that has gone on for 50 years. The convictions of the accused in the 1993 Bombay blast by the Special court were concluded after 14 years and that appears not to be the end. The inordinate delays are due to the extremely complex nature of the judicial process which has in built mechanisms for inordinate delays.
