In less than three years from its inauguration, Ranga Shankara will host the 1,000th performance on its stage on September 12. The honour will go to the play Pampabharata by the troupe Samudaya.
Given that there are 905 "theatre days” (Monday being the weekly off) between its opening on October 27, 2004 and September 12, 2007, Ranga Shankara has averaged more than one show a day. This way, the young space dedicated to theatre has exceeded its primary target of hosting a show everyday.
They will have had 1,000 shows of 332 plays by this Wednesday.
A release states that these plays have been in 15 different languages with an audience of 1,76,137 as of August 31, 2007.
The release quotes Arundhati Nag, the creative director and the brain behind Ranga Shankara as saying, "The 1,000th show mark is very significant for us given that we had committed to relentless theatre in a city where a dedicated space for theatre did not exist. We feel extraordinarily blessed to be having the enthusiasm and unconditional support from everybody to keep theatre alive.”
