Pacewoman Jhulan Goswami will carry all Indian hopes at the fourth ICC Awards function here on Monday night. Jhulan is the sole Indian to make it to the shortlist of nominees for the Women's Cricketer of the Year award.
Jhulan will battle it out with Australian Lisa Sthalekar and Englishwoman Claire Taylor for top honours. Australian Karen Rolton had won the inaugural award in Mumbai last year.
Not surprisingly, the cynosure will be Australian captain Ricky Ponting, in line for a maximum possible four awards. Ponting, who was named the Cricketer of the Year as well as the ODI Player of the Year last year, is also in the hunt for the Test Player of the Year and Captain Of the Year awards.
Last time around, Shane Warne had walked away with the Test Player of the Year honours while Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene, the surprise choice for Captain of the Year, is Ponting's only competitor for the leadership honours this time. The nominees for the five individual men's awards were selected by a five-man panel headed by Sunil Gavaskar, and which also included Chris Cairns, Gary Kirsten, Iqbal Qasim and Alec Stewart.
