The New Zealand education fair, held in Bangalore on Sunday, had representatives from 20 educational institutions counselling parents and students on the advantages of studying in New Zealand and briefing them about various undergraduate and post graduate courses offered in their institutions.
The one-day fair, which received a good response, had students enquiring about various courses besides traditional courses like engineering.
“The students who attended the fair had already done their research about the institutions in which they want to study. Most of them were enquiring for courses like mass communication, multi media and bio-technology,” Jugnu Roy, Trade Development Manager of New Zealand Trade and Enterprises told Deccan Herald.
New Zealand education programmes and degrees are based on the British system.
Besides, New Zealand government has administered Code of Practice for the pastoral care of international students. Over 1,200 institutions are signatories to the code, which is designed to ensure consistent and high standard of pastoral care to all international students studying at New Zealand institutions. Students are eligible to work up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year. Also, students undertaking a course of 12 months or more may work full-time over vacations.
Migrant category
International students who have graduated from a course in New Zealand would gain points under the Skilled Migrant Category, may apply for a six-month open work permit. Students who may apply for a two-year post-study work permit to obtain practical work experience relevant to their qualification.
Eligible students’ partners may apply for a work permit, valid for the duration of the course of study.
