Students stage dharna
Shidlaghatta, DHNS:

Students laid siege to the social welfare officer’s office in Shidlaghatta and staged dharna, demanding redressal of the dalit students’ grievances.

The protesters urged the officer to discuss the problems of Dalit students and take steps to solve them soon. The scholarship for 2006-07 was not yet released and the books and sports materials to be provided to Ambedkar Students’ Hostel, for the year 2007-08, were not supplied, the protesters alleged.

There is shortage of cooking staff in the college boys’ hostel, they complained.

Adding that, even in the girls’ hostel no action has been initiated against the warden Nagaratnamma, despite several complaints were lodged against her.

It was also  alleged that the warden had sent the inmates home at night.  They withdrew protest after the social welfare officer assured of looking into all these issues as early as possible.  Convenor Devaraj, Prabhakar, Ambarish, A M Devaraju, Munivenkatesh and Muniraj and others  led the protest.
