Congress candidate Prasad has won the election for the APMC member posts, defeating JD(S) candidate Srinivas Reddy by 145 votes.
Significance
The post for the member of APMC was vacant since the death of A Channappa.
The election had a great significance in the Srnivaspur taluk.
For the Congress, the election was a matter of challenge as it had been maintaining its victory since Channappa’s days. On the other side, Dal too was eager to win.
Though sufficient police were deployed in the taluk fearing violence, the police failed to control it.
In the last election, Channappa had won at the margin of 1,800 votes whereas this time the margin has come down.
Out of the total 3,445 votes, only 2,094 votes were cast.
Prasad from Congress got 1,099 votes, while Shiva Reddy from Dal got 954 votes.
Police deployed
In connection with the violence which happened on Sunday, the Deputy Superintendent of Police has stayed at the place and has also deployed additional police forces.
