Asian hopes took a tumble on a low-key first day of the Bali International on Monday, as Lindsay Davenport prepared for her first singles foray in a year.
Indonesia’s Lavinia Tananta was trounced by American Julie Ditty 6-4, 6-3 while Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei was crushed 6-0, 6-0 by Youlia Fedossova of France.
But Japan’s Aumi Morita was a winner, rallying to a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Sloveni’s Andreja Klepac.
In other first round matches, Sloak Jarmila Gajdosoa eased past Russia’s Edina Galovits while Romania’s Sorana Cirstea beat another Russian, Alina Jidkova. Former world number one Davenport, is returning to th WTA Tour just three months after giving birth.
