Proceedings against prosecutor dropped

The High Court, on Monday, dropped the contempt proceedings initiated against an assistant public prosecutor (APP) of Nagamangala, Mandya district, while accepting his unconditional apology.

Nagamangala APP Devananda was alleged to have acted against the dignity of a JMFC court including usage of the word  `non-sense’ during a hearing before a lady magistrate, in Nov 2006.

Following a report from the district judge, the High Court had initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against him.

At the hearing on Monday, Mr Devananda submitted an unconditional apology before the Division Bench comprising Justice Chidananda Ullal and Justice HN Nagamohan Das. The Bench accepted the apology and dropped the contempt proceedings.

Detention
The High Court on Monday upheld preventive detention of a matka operator, Chandrakanth alias Chandan of Belgaum.

The High Court dismissed a habeas corpus petition by his brother, challenging the detention order passed in January 2007.
