But this has not stopped Bangaloreans from purchasing new vehicles. Every year the number of vehicles that add on to the city’s already congested roads is growing at a steady pace.
Here are a few statistics that reveal how obsessed we are with owning vehicles.
A study conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), reveals that there are around 2.9 million (29 lakh) registered vehicles in the city till January 2007 and that almost 900 vehicles are being added on to the roads every day, making Bangalore the city with the highest vehicular growth rate, amongst all Indian cities having population over a million with its total number of vehicles only next to Delhi.
The study conducted by TERI over a period of three months which is available with the Deccan Herald also states that one in three households owned a personal vehicle in 2007, as compared to one in 10 households in 1998.
Bangaloreans’ love for zipping through the city in their two-wheelers is a well-known fact and this is highlighted in the study, which states that Bangalore has the highest share of two wheelers (73 per cent) as compared to any other large sized city in India.
“ With a booming economy Bangalore is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. A large chuck of the population here prefer to own vehicles, especially two-wheelers. Women and students prefer two-wheelers and the reasons highlighted for this are safety, security, easy accessibility and that it saves time,” Ranjan K Bose, director, Centre for Urban Systems and Infrastructure, TERI told Deccan Herald.
Another high which Bangalore scores over other cities, is the injuries suffered in road accidents, which is the highest in the country.
