The Madras High Court on Tuesday prohibited Anna University from admitting students under the government and other VIP quotas.
Disposing of a public interest litigation, the first bench consisting of Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Jothimani said, ‘Government quota, donors quota and sponsored quota for the Madras Institute of Technology(MIT) and AC College of Technology that are effected through resolutions of the Anna University, are violative of equality clause under Art 14 of the Constitution.”
Single window system
However, as admission of students had already been completed under the management quota for 2007-08, they could continue their course.
“The State Government quota of two per cent shall be filled through the single window system in accordance with merit,” the bench ruled.
It, however, held that admission of students through Consortium of Industries category “is valid, subject to a maximum of 15 per cent, including the NRI.”
In his petition, ‘Goodluck’, Rajendran of Tiruvadanai, Ramanathapuram alleged that there were irregularities in admitting students in four constituent colleges of Anna University under the government and VIP quotas and as many as 60 students are admitted every year, regardless of merit.
He demanded that a CBI enquiry and a ban on admitting students under the government category be effected.
The court rejected the contention of counsel for Anna University that the quotas which were determined by the university syndicate for donors and others, had been in vogue for the past 30 years and this would not affect the chances of students seeking admission on merit through the single window system.
