Rowdyism still a menace: IGP
DH News Service, Mangalore:
Priorities of the Police force in Dakshina Kannada district still remain to be fighting rowdyism, said IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad.

Speaking at an interactive meeting on ‘Law and order situation in the district’ at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Wednesday, he said that though a Anti Rowdy Squad was created years back to check the rowdy menace, what really needed is to train the personnel in every police station to tackle it. There is a need to track down the elements involved, he added.

Citing communal tension as the only other bothering problem, he said that police take much care in avoiding communal clashes in the district, especially during festive occasions. The regular crimes are not very alarming and the force has been able to control the Naxalites to a great extent, he added. Appreciating the work of the Anti-Naxal Force, the IGP called for public co-operation and support in maintaining law and order.

Image makeover
Speaking on the importance of quality policing and friendly policing, he said that this can be done by interaction at the higher levels as well as quality investigation and interrogation at the lower level. He said that the police force in DK is keeping a close watch on immigration, which is very important as terrorism is on a rampage all over the world. The Coastal Security Force has been formed for this purpose, he added.

Suggestions
Responding to a set of suggestions made by the KCCI, the IGP said that decision to have a RAF unit stationed in the district has to be taken by the central government and hoped that DK would not need this as RAF is posted in areas of communal tension. Regarding the dearth of personnel in the Force, he said that recruitment are going on and that all the vacancies will be filled in a short time. The formation of a police commissionerate in Mangalore will make the presence of the Force more felt in the area, he added.

Interaction
He further responded to an array of queries from the public, mainly concerning the traffic woes of the City. A participant urged the IGP to take up confidence building measures to avoid inconvenience to the public when there is a bundh call.

KCCI President Capt John Prasad Menezes, Vice President Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, Hon Secretaries Srinivas Kamath and Shekhar Pujari and Hon Treasurer Ahmed Bava were present.
