Jatti Committee Fixes Land Ceiling
Bangalore, Sept 12.
The Jatti Committee on Land and Tenancy Reforms, which submitted its report on Tuesday last, has recommended the constitution of a permanent body headed by a Judge of the High Court for fixing the basic holdings in various areas and decided the question of payment of compensation to landlords.
The Committee was stated to have recommended the fixation of rent at one-fifth of the gross produce from the land.
Famine Spectre Haunts Bengal
New Delhi, Sept. 12.
Members from West Bengal belonging to all parties appealed to the Union Government today to take prompt action to avert famine in Bengal.
They said that Bengal was today facing the worst food situation since 1943, the year of the great famine.

34 Die In Amritsar Bus-Train Smash
Amritsar, Sept 12.
Thirty-four persons, most of them Akali Dal (L) agitators, were killed and 21 injured nine of them seriously when a bus carrying them rammed the Amritsar-Khem Karan Passenger at an unmanned level-crossing near Taran Taran about 20 km from here, last night.
Of the dead 31 were Akali workers who had courted arrest outside the Golden Temple last evening.
