The elections for the posts of the president and vice-president of the Zilla Panchayat will be held here on Friday.
A meeting of the Congress leaders and ZP members had been called in Bangalore, to bring in a common consensus among all the ZP members, in this regard. However, the leaders failed to bring in unanimity among the members.
The post of the president has been reserved for woman (General Category). However, earlier, candidate belonging to the Okkaliga community had been elected as the president, thus, a person belonging to the Backward Class should be appointed this time, ZP members Krishnasingh, Mangamma Muniswamy, Narayanswamy, Gowramma Devaraj and others have urged.
They said, any one member from the three elected woman members belonging to the Backward Class Kokila Radhakrishna, Naveeda Khanum and Gowramma Devaraj, should be appointed.
Similarly, for the post of vice-president, any one member out of the following - Balaji Chennaiah, J Krishnasingh, Avani Krishnappa and Narayanswamy, should be elected, they urged.
However, the senior leaders were not agreeable to this demand. Union Minister K H Muniyappa vehemently opposed this proposal. He said, only those members to who the reservation has been mentioned, should be elected, he added.
The elders settled to go according to the rules and thus, for the woman (General Category), one among the three women candidates - Vijayalakshmi Chowdegowda of Bairakuru constituency of Mulbagal taluk and Somayajapalliya Nagaratna of Shrinivaspura taluk and Shobha of Rayalpadu constituency of Shrinivaspura taluk, will be elected. As per the speculations, Vijayalakshmi Chowdegowda seems to be the most likely candidate.
Similarly, for the vice-president’s post, one among the following candidates - Naganal Somanna of Vemagal, P Ramegowda of Malur taluk and Shriramareddy of Bangarpete taluk, will be appointed.
The senior leaders have decided to appoint the president and the vice-president. Thus, members belonging to the backward classes seem to be unhappy with this decision. KPCC leaders Allam Veerabhadrappa, M V Venkatappa, Union Minister K H Muniyappa, MLA Dr M C Sudhakar Reddy, DCC President N S Bisegowda, former president Ashwathnarayan Reddy, former MLA A Nagaraj, Narayanswamy, ZP President V Venkatamuniyappa and other leaders were present at the meeting.
