Spreading light of knowledge in urban slums
Shainu Mohan
In the midst of cut-throat competiton, the desire to excel and gain in terms of money, name and fame, there is one section of the society that functions not for profit but for benefitting the less privileged and solving social problems.

Here is such an entity, an NGO foundation called Aashayein Foundation, formed by a group of individuals interested in associating themselves with social causes.  They work toward reducing and slowly removing the social problems that prevail in a society through well-defined and concerted efforts.

Aashayein Foundation which was started on May 19 2007, primarly focuses in providing education for the underprivileged kids of the society who don’t get chance to go to school. Among the activities of the foundation are taking English classes, computer classes, serving breakfast on Sundays, and donation of clothes.

In order to create and sustain educational opportunities for kids in the age group 6 to 16 years, from economically background sections of urban society Aashayein Foundation has started a project called ‘Bachche Mann Ke Sachche’. “If the present situation is not addressed, these children will lose their creativity and continue to live with the unfulfilled dreams.  These kids will grow up blaming the circumstances for their condition”, says Sunil Kumar, a member of  Aashayein foundation and associate software engineer of Bosch.

Slum kids to school
The main objective of the project, which has well commited youngsters, is to conduct thorough surveys and identify children from the slum areas, who are not going to school, and get them admitted in the schools in the same area they live in.

Says Sunil Kumar,  “By providing education to these kids, we will give them the platform that will facilitate them to create a future they want to live and accomplish their dreams.  They will then grow up to become successful and responsible citizens of India. Already 29 children have been selected under this scheme.”

The foundation is also looking forward to hold a music competition, involving kids of orphanages, through their another project called ‘Sur tarang’ in October.

Through the project ‘Bache Mann Ke Sache’, Aashayein foundation wants to present everyone of the society an opportunity of fulfilling an child’s dream by participating in this project by identifying the kids not going to school and inform them through their website.  Forms and other details are available in their website, www.Aashayeinfoundation.org.
