Why knot, asks Jhansi Subbiah
Srikanth Srinivasa

Upcoming television actress Jhansi Subbiah who became popular for playing vamp roles with aplomb and sophistication, tied the nuptial knot to Kaverappa Muckatira in traditional Coorgi style in the City recently. While Jhansi hails from Somawarpet taluk in Kodagu district, her newly wed husband Kaverappa is a businessman and a coffee planter from Nelgi (near Bhagamandala) in Kodagu district.

In this brief chat with Metrolife, Jhansi talks about her marriage and life as a newly-wed wife to a businessman. Excerpts:

How did you this marriage proposal come about?
I should say that it is an arranged match. The proposal came to me after my parents had agreed to the match. The elders of the two families got together and went ahead with our engagement in November last year.

Did you ever think that you will get into an arranged marriage? Why did it take so long for the marriage to happen after the engagement?

I had never dreamt of getting into an arranged match as I had believed in love marriage. But, I have realised that it is better to marry a person who loves you than marry someone whom you love. I needed some time to finish my commitments and I had also made it clear that I would ready for marriage only by  mid-2007.

What is your take on marriage as an institution?

Marriage is a sacred bond between man and wife and I would like to lead the rest of my life with my man and his family. Marriage to me is for keeps till the end. It is really good to have someone care for you with spouses getting to understand each other.

What do you think is the ingredient for a successful marriage?
I think respect for each other is very important in a marriage. I am happy about how the whole marriage ceremony was conducted.

It was a total family affair and a big wedding. It was such an emotional moment for me as I got married with blessings of elders from both families.

How do you react to the sharp criticism that you get for playing negative roles on television?

People should understand that I have a screen image that is different from my real personal image. I am a reserved, soft-spoken, practical and a straightforward person in reality.

I don’t even believe in gossiping and I avoid those people who indulge in such small talk.
