Bhavya Krishna and Jisha S

Creative hair colourist for Schwarzkopf Professional, Millicent Howe conducted a live demonstration of the latest techniques and styles in hair colour at the ASK Academy in the City. The workshop ‘Inspired Grandeur’ had the latest techniques in hair colouring being demonstrated in the presence of top hairstylists from all over the City. Schwarzkopf Professional, with partnership from Millie, intends to focus on innovative concepts and services in hairstyling that match the needs of international hair salon business.

Millicent Howe, popularly known as Millie in the fashion world, has clientele ranging from Hollywood celebrities to top-notch designers and musicians. Some of her clients include Kate Blanchett, Jodie Kidd and Anabella Scirorra. At the workshop, Millie interpreted the styles and techniques of colouring in a completely Indian context. Metrolife caught up with her and being in the field for more than 11 years, Millie had a lot to share with the readers on hair trends, styles and techniques.

Excerpts:
What are the recent trends in hairstyling and colour?
The latest trends are tonging, flicks, inconsistent curls, disconnected fringes in accordance with the size and shape of the face. For hair colouring, understanding colour chemistry is the key to trendy hair.

What is the criteria for colour selection?
It depends on your complexion, eye colour and even the lifestyle. Lifestyle is an important factor since the texture and time have to match with the profession of the person.

You have been working with a lot of celebrities. Who do you enjoy working with the most?
No one in particular. I enjoy the work irrespective of the client.

Have you worked with anyone in Bollywood? What’s your Indian experience?
No, I haven’t had a chance to work with anyone in Bollywood.

I came to India as part of an educational programme to train salon professionals.

I have travelled around metros like Delhi, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Kolkatta, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai as part of the programme. Indian models are gorgeous.

What are the career prospects in Indian hairstyle industry?
People here are well educated and intelligent. There is a demand for more education in this field. Price is high for quality service. But things are going to change in 10 to 15 years. Even now the Indian fashion industry is witnessing a market boom.

Some hair care tips?
Everybody needs treatment for their hair. It is particularly relevant in the Indian climate. We are taking care of our skin from getting dehydrated. Same care is necessary for the hair also.

You must take an occasional oil treatment. You should be open to fashion as well.

Indian women have long jaw bones, beautiful eyes and a good complexion. Parting the hair right in the middle doesn’t suit such faces.

Disconnected fringes are better than just hanging the long beautiful hair right along the cheek bones.

What about hairstyling for men?
Yes, I am really interested in it. I am planning to come back to India with specific packages for men.
