Gadget to keep drivers awake at the wheel
A young Malaysian’s constant worry that her father could fall asleep while driving has resulted in the invention of a device to keep drivers awake at the wheel, reports PTI from Kuala Lumpur.
Lim Boon Yean, 20, and her three friends Ea Qiu Hua, 21, Ngan Seok Chern, 22, and Lum Yan Yan, 21, will represent Malaysia at the Global Youth Forum in Geneva with their invention. “When the heart rate goes down, it indicates that the person is either sad or sleepy. So the device, called the Psycho Analysis gadget, plays an upbeat tune and vibrates to wake up the driver,” said Lim, adding that it can be installed as a software in an MP3 player, worn on a watch or as a band.
Shakira takes a break for study in university
Shakira may get high grades in singing and swiveling her hips, but what about ancient Western history? For the past month, the Colombian pop star has attended a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, called “Introduction to Western Civilisation: Ancient Civilisations from Prehistory to Circa AD 843”, reports AP from Los Angeles.
“She went when she finished her tour, for the summer,” Shakira’s manager Fifi Kurzman told The Associated Press. The class began August 6 and ended on Thursday, though Shakira did not attend the last few classes, according to course lecturer Robert Cleve. Cleve said he had not known she was a celebrity during the course and was astonished to learn she was a pop star. “She looked like just an ordinary student. She wasn’t flamboyant ... she didn’t act like a big celebrity or anything.”
Mentally ill man throws 6 kids out of window
A man in China’s Hunan Province has been arrested for allegedly throwing six children from third storey of a school building, killing one girl and injuring others, reports PTI from Beijing.
The incident occurred Thursday in Hongqiao town when the 28-year-old suspect seized the children, aged between eight and nine years, in a hallway of the school and tossed them out of a window. One girl died while the others were rushed to a hospital.
Longaria says she hates kissing scenes
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria has grown to dislike kissing scenes after she got married to basketball star Tony Parker, reports IANS from London. Longoria admitted that she has never been comfortable kissing anyone but her husbands or boyfriends, reports contactmusic.com. And now, she absolutely hates kissing onscreen.
"It was weird for me before I was married. I hate the kissing. Kissing is the most intimate thing. I'm not sure he's happy with it, but he's not the crazy husband about it," she said.
