Inaugurating the Devadiga Samaja Bhavan building built at a cost of Rs 1.88 crore at Gandhinagar in Mangalore on Sunday, Mr Moily said that development is possible only when people break out of the prison of caste.
“The rigidity of caste and superstitious belief must wither away from the minds of the people. Development of the society is possible only when emphasis is given as education has the power to open up opportunities for the people,” he said and suggested that the younger generation must not be bound to the walls of caste. They must be set free enough to dream big and achieve it through education.
He said that changes are inevitable in the society and as the president of Reforms Commission his aim is to bring in ‘creative destruction’, which aims at bringing about a qualitative shift in the mentality and system of working to a system that will liberate our minds.
He said that in a country like India there are several starting factors that people live with, of which one such factor is the idea of merging nature (prakruti) with culture (sanskriti). Citing an example of the Shravanabelagola, he said while Shravanabelagola is a part of the nature, the monolithic statue of Gomateshwara is our culture. This kind of amazing blend is not found else where.
He said that the famous story of ‘Punyakoti’, the cattle and her encounter with the tiger was a lesson in the schools earlier. But today it is no more a part of the syllabus. He said that in the poem, the tiger wants to eat away Punyakoti, which is the nature of the Tiger. But the tiger takes pity on the cattle and lets her go, that is the culture, which must reach our present generation.
Mangalore MLA N Yogish Bhat addressing the gathering said that Mangalore is soon going to witness huge growth with the PCPIR project that is being planned. “A meeting with the central government will be held by the top officials of the state on September 20 to convince them that Mangalore is the right destination for the project. With the establishment of PCPIR project, a sum of Rs 2 lakh crore will flow into the district,” he added.
