Ramar Sethu: UPA government lacks guts
Sir, Once again Dr Manmohan Singh was out of the loop – this time in filing the affidavit by his government that Rama is a myth. The present case is an illustration of the UPA government's inability to show guts and acknowledge a mistake and address it.
It is well known that the UPA government functions under the direction of Mrs Sonia Gandhi. If it gets bouquets then she receives them while brickbats are hurled at the others who form a firing line to protect her. When she realizes the opposition and fears that an issue would adversely impact a vote bank then she steps in to right the wrong and earns encomiums. Congress spokesman Mr Abhishek Singhvi, who is good at verbal jugglery said, 'To err is human, but to rectify is divine', the ASI bureaucrats are humanized by receiving all the blame for the affidavit – but who is made divine? Divinity is a manifestation of godliness one wonders which god's divinity he has in mind.

Sensible decision
Sir, Apropos your editorial A sad loss (DH, Sept, 15). Dravid’s decision to quit as the captain comes as a surprise to cricket lovers. He was a fierce competitor and a firm protector of his own players. He attributed the success to the team and took responsibilities for their failures. He remained cool and positive in the middle of a crucial match and by his conduct, has set an example for fellow players. Considering the cricket left in him, his decision, though premature, seems sensible.

Sack the VC
Sir, Many local and national newspapers have recently published the misdeeds that happened at Mysore University between 2003-2007.
Surprisingly, both the teacher’s associations are silent over the issue, giving an impression that they could be hand-in-glove with the administration. Clearly in this case, the governor must consider sacking the University Vice-Chancellor.

Registrar is targeted
Sir, It is unfortunate to witness a prestigious institution like the Mysore University mired in controversy. Clearly, things like questionable appointment of faculty members, excess intake of MBA students and awarding Ph D’s to undeserving candidates are serious in nature.
Since the Registrar (Evaluation) A B Ibrahim is honest and started probing the activities of the Vice-Chancellor, the latter wants him to go. The controversy needs to be brought to a swift end.

Respect sentiments
Sir, In the view of the Ram Sethu affidavit issue, it is shocking to see politicians and sections of the media treating Hindu sentiments casually.
Even genuine objections expressed by the Hindus are dismissed as extremist, a stark contrast to the way minority issues are dealt with.
The so-called secularists and others must learn to respect the Hindu sentiments.

Accident and violence
Sir, Recently there has been an increase in road accidents that seem to set off violence.
Such incidents reported in the press reveal mobs taking law into their hands, dealing out rough and ready justice. They beat up people who they thought were responsible for the accident to the point of death and damage to vehicles. These incidents are reported mostly from UP, Bihar and West Bengal.
Social psychologists must study the phenomenon and the government must take preventive action, before more lives and property are lost to these acts of violence.
